Charlie’s First Mountain Adventure

My first trip on the mountain

My very first trip to the mountains was one I will never forget.  It was a beautiful, sunny Saturday.  We came up to walk the property.  I love all the smells on this mountain!  Boy, there are so many, it overloads my senses.  Because I am a Spaniel, I’m always hunting a trail.

This particular day, my nose got the best of me and got me in a lot of trouble!  I slipped away by myself without anyone noticing and met my first skunk.  He was so cute and looked so much like me with his black and white coloring.  I thought we could be friends, so I tried to get closer to him.  To my shock, he had no intention of playing with me and actually sprayed me three times.  What was that foul stuff he shot at me?  I was horrified!  How rude.  Now, I was in even more trouble trying to figure out how to get back down the mountain without them noticing what had happened to me.  What was I going to do about that awful smell?  Maybe they wouldn’t notice!

I casually strolled back down the mountain and caught up with them.  They had been calling me repeatedly, but I just hated to face them.  They took one look at me and knew exactly what I had been up to.  I heard them saying how they smelled me before I even got close.  I was so relieved I didn’t get in trouble…well, sort of.

The worst bath in the world

What took place next was excruciating for me.  Three baths in a row… in the creek!  The last bath was the worst of all.  What were they thinking, tomato juice – seriously?  Tomato juice covered every square inch of my beautiful white coat.  I was utterly exhausted by this point.  I was already pretty tired from playing all day.  After that third bath, I was done!  I was so relieved they stopped trying to get that nasty skunk smell off of me.  They gave it their best effort.  It was my fault to end such a beautiful day this way.

The long trip home

Of course, the worst part was that we still had to travel 2 1/2 hours back to South Carolina with me in this condition.  As we traveled back, they commented how they thought I smelled better.  We stopped by a fast food drive-through to grab a quick bite.  I was so hungry!  I really needed a hamburger!!  Taking three baths in a row gave me a ferocious appetite.  I felt so bad for them, poor things, as we approached the window.  The nice lady opened the window to take the money and the first thing out of her mouth was, “I SMELL A SKUNK!”

I will never forget the day I ran in to this stinky fellow.  My best advice to anyone reading this would be, “Don’t try to make friends with a skunk.”  You’ll be very sorry you tried and will be reminded for months to come.

Love, Charlie

Oh, by the way, once I got back to South Carolina I got many more baths with  Nature’s Miracle Skunk Odor Remover.  I wished they had this earlier!  It might have spared me from the tomato juice bath!

Okay, you doggies out there, got any skunk stories?  Was there a product that worked for you to get rid of that skunk smell?
